RV 101 Top 5 Tools to Keep in your RV with Mark Polk

In the RV 101 how to video, Mark Polk with RV Education 101 discusses the top 5 tools new RV owners and experienced RV owners alike should keep in their travel trailer or motorhome.

A digital volt meter. This is absolutely essential. You can use it for a quick check of the battery’s state of charge. You can test 12-volt DC circuits and 12-volt fuses. And you can check 120-volt AC circuits and outlets.

In addition to a volt meter, I keep a digital line monitor in the RV. You can use it to test the faulty wiring at the campground before plugging the RV in, and you can use it to monitor AC voltage during your trip.

What does The Battery Minder do? Watch how it charges the battery, it maintains and desulfates the battery and will never overcharge the battery.

You not only want an accurate RV tire inflation gauge, but you want one with a dual foot design and one that is capable of checking high air pressure like what is typically found in motorhome tires.

Finally, I don’t recommend using air compressors at gas stations for two reasons, one is they are abused and you don’t know if the inflation pressure is accurate, and two is if you check the tire pressure when the tires are hot you get inaccurate readings, which can be dangerous. This is why you might want to consider purchasing a portable air compressor.

RV 101 – RV Pre-Trip Checklist

My entire military career was spent in wheeled and track vehicle maintenance. After spending years as an Automotive Maintenance Warrant Officer I can tell you the United States Army has an exceptional maintenance program, if it is carried out properly. The backbone of the program is preventive maintenance checks and services. At the operator level, vehicle operators are taught to perform preventive checks on their vehicle and equipment prior to using it. They follow a checklist, and they record deficiencies they find on a form and turn it in to the motor pool before the vehicle can leave. If the deficiencies are minor the vehicle can be used, but if there are major deficiencies (like a bad oil leak) the vehicle must be repaired before it can be used. The idea is to identify problems early, before the problem gets worse,  preventing the vehicle and the operator from completing their job or mission.

RV 101 Guide – What to Consider When Buying an RV

The Internet changed the way we live, and the way we conduct business. I remember asking myself what this thing called “Amazon” was all about, and now the annual gross profit ranges around 115 Billion, that’s with a ‘B’. The Internet changed the way we work too. In 1999 I started a dotcom business (RV Education 101) that is now in it’s 21st year of successful online operation. We went from selling training videos on VHS tapes, to now offering content on an online platform the consumer can view on a smartphone whenever they want or need a refresher on how everything works on their RV.

I also remember working as an RV sales and F&I manager in the mid-90s, prior to the Internet boom. We made hard-calls to bring potential customers into our sales lot and sold RVs through one-on-one negotiations, haggling the selling price of the RV. Consumers were conditioned for this type of buying process through decades of purchasing cars and trucks from automobile dealerships. It was how we did business.

Now, in what seems like a blink of the eye, the Internet changed the way we do everything. Companies like Carvana made a strong presence, and through effective advertising campaigns started changing our way of thinking on how to buy an automobile.  Their tag line is, “sit back, relax and experience a whole new way to buy a car.” You can literally find the car you are searching for, take a virtual tour of the car, get a history report on the car, finance the car, buy the car and have it delivered to your home without getting off the couch. For old-school people, used to haggling and negotiating the price, it takes longer to accept changes like this, but change is going to happen and the Internet plays a major role in many changes happening today.

RVing 101 – Types of RVs

Are you looking to buy an RV? What is the best one for you? Are you curious about, or would like to know more about the different types of RVs there are? When it comes to selecting the right RV everybody is different, so it makes sense there are lots of different types and sizes of RVs to choose from. In this RV video host Mark Polk, with RV Education 101 discusses all the different types of RVs there are. There are many choices: travel trailers, 5th wheels, motorhomes, toy haulers, hybrid camping trailer, pop up….what is right for you?

Before we talk about the types of Recreation Vehicles (RVs) we should discuss what an RV is. The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) describes an RV as a vehicle that combines transportation and temporary living quarters for travel, recreation and camping.

RVs come in many different types, sizes and price ranges. Some are very basic starting around $7,000 and provide basic sleeping arrangements and cooking facilities. On the other end of the spectrum there are luxury land yachts on wheels costing more than $1,000,000.

RVs are categorized into two groups, towable & motorized CLICK HERE to read more
